The capability to create free iPhone ringtones with Apple’s GarageBand application (which is bundled with every Mac) is relatively easy. Start by launching GarageBand on your Mac and creating a new iPhone ringtone project.

1Click the Media Browser button to reveal the media browser pane.

Click the disclosure triangle to reveal the contents of your iTunes library.

2Click your iTunes music library to reveal its contents. Select the song you want to turn into a ringtone and drag it onto the timeline.

The bottom line is that you can make ringtones only from songs you’ve ripped yourself from CD or downloaded without rights management or other copy protection (such as MP3s from Amazon.com or files in Apple’s iTunes Plus format).

3Click the cycle region button to enable the cycle region.

Click in the middle of the cycle region and drag it to the portion of the song you want to use as your ringtone.

4Fine-tune the start and end points by clicking and dragging the cycle region’s left and right edges.

For best results, keep your ringtones under 30 seconds.

5Click the play button to hear your work. When you’re satisfied with it, choose Share→Send Ringtone to iTunes.

The next time you sync, your new ringtone becomes available on your iPhone. To use it as your ringtone, tap Settings→Sounds→Ringtone, and then tap the ringtone in the list of available sounds.

To associate the ringtone with a specific contact or contacts, find the contact in either the Contacts app or the Phone app’s Contacts tab, tap Ringtone, and then tap the specific ringtone in the list of available ringtones.

Creating custom ringtones using GarageBand

To create ringtones through the GarageBand app on iPhone:

  1. If you haven't done so, download the free GarageBand app from the App Store.
  2. In the app, tap Tracks at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose Audio Recorder.
  4. Tap the Multitrack button at the top left.

  5. Select the Loop Browser button at the top right.
  6. Tap the selector you want in the pop-up. Choices include Apple Loops, Files, and Music. In this example, we're selecting Music.
  7. Find the song you want to use for your ringtone. You can only use iTunes-purchased songs that have also been downloaded to your device. You cannot use Apple Music songs, unfortunately.

  8. Press, then hold on the song, dragging it into GarageBand.

Editing the clip

Next, you need to cut the clip, so it's no longer than 30 seconds in length. Otherwise, you cannot use it as a ringtone.

  1. Grab the ends of the song in GarageBand and drag them inward. Be sure to capture your favorite part of the song for the ringtone.
  2. Press the play button to preview the ringtone at any time.

Finally, it's time to save the song clip as a ringtone.

  1. Tap the My Songs icon at the top left of the GarageBand screen.
  2. Choose My Songs from the pull-down.
  3. Long press on the clip you just saved.
  4. Tap Rename.

Assigning your new ringtone

You can access and change your ringtones on your iPhone as follows:

  1. Tap the Settings app on your Home screen.
  2. Choose Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Select Ringtone under Sounds and Vibration Patterns.
  4. Select the newly created ringtone under Ringtones to make it your default ringtone.

If you want to use your new ringtone selectively, you can assign it to specific contacts.

  1. Tap the Contacts app on your iPhone Home screen.
  2. Choose the contact you wish to assign the new ringtone.

  5. Select the newly created ringtone under Ringtones to assign it to this contact.
  6. Tap Done.
  7. Select Done again.
  8. Repeat Steps 2 through 7 to assign the rington to other contacts.
